Item description
Produced and published by Henry Wellge, this depiction of Montana's State Capital shows the city in a period of significant growth and prosperity as the nation enjoyed endured economic growth during the so-called Gilded Age. Panoramic maps served as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic and financial features. Wellge was one of the most prolific producers of birds eye perspective and is among six cartographers responsible for creating more than half of all panoramic maps in the United States. His characteristic style and distinctive aesthetic make his work immediately stand out and transport the viewer back in time.
Helena was officially established in 1864 following the discovery of vast gold deposits in the region and the subsequent gold rush that followed. Its roots as a gold camp would be transformed during the wealth boom in 1888 when the city became home to fifty millionaires, more per capita than any city in the world. By 1890 the city’s reputation had been transformed, and it began a period of cultural transformation with the construction of numerous civic buildings that would allow it to become a thriving center for the region. Its signature Victorian architecture endures to this day, and it remains one of the most iconic places in the American West.
This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history that captures Helena in a period of transformation, expansion, and prosperity. Birds eye perspectives are notable for their ornate flourishes and were widely popular during the nineteenth century.
