Item description
Published during a time of significant growth, transformation, and prosperity, this unique depiction of one of the most iconic cities of the Northeast was produced by noted Boston-based mapmakers Sampson, Murdock Co. The city had experienced a boom in population throughout the 1800s and by 1899 was home to more than one hundred and seventy-five thousand residents. This expansion was spurred by immigrants from Italy, Western Europe, Ireland, and Germany settling in the city and establishing neighborhoods along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. Immigrants were drawn to the cities thriving commercial fishing industry and many manufacturing plants.
Providence was one of the first cities in the United States to industrialize and became known for its textile, machining, and silverware factories. The Rhode Island State House was constructed in the year prior to this publication and remains a historic site. The latter portions of the nineteenth century saw Providence as a hub of modernization, with City Hall powered by electric lighting. The nation as a whole was experiencing unprecedented prosperity during the so-called ‘Gilded Age.’
The distinctive aesthetic immediately transports the viewer back in time and creates an indelible bond between the past and present. Sampson, Murdock Co primarily produced maps of Boston and the surrounding regions, and this depiction bears their signature detail, accuracy, and style. This rare piece of American cartographical history gives the viewer a glimpse into Providence's rich history and how it evolved through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
