Item description
Vintage original 11 x 14 in. US double-weight matte photograph from the classic 1950s musical drama/romance, PORGY AND BESS, released in 1959 by Columbia Pictures and directed by Otto Preminger and an uncredited Rouben Mamoulian. Based upon the play, Porgy, by Heyward, a woman whose past is scorned by nearly everyone around her meets a man who'd love her regardlessly- if only everyone else would allow them to.
The image features an upbeat exterior scene depicting Sportin' Life (Sammy Davis Jr.) singing and dancing as the rest of the group accompanies him. This photograph was used for publication in a newspaper and features blue grease pencil crops marks and hand embellishments in white ink around Davis' image. On the verso is a portion of the actual newspaper clipping of this photograph as well as additional handwritten notations. It is in fair+ condition only as shown with one staple near the top left corner and creases throughout.
Provenance: The Hearst Herald Examiner newspaper archive.
