Item description
I've had this deviled egg plate for a long time, wondering who made it. It is quite similar to the common egg plate made by Indiana Glass Company -- but the difference is that there are no beads on the backs of the egg hollows! My last 2 photos are to show that there are no beads on the back of the egg hollows. It also seems to be made of slightly better quality glass. Recently I was looking through some scans of Jeannette Glass catalogs and there I finally saw who had made it! It is shown in the 1971 Jeannette catalog, in a green color and in clear.
It has a very light marigold stain or wash over it. Jeannette did a lot of cold painting and staining of their glass to color it -- including a lot of Marigold. But this is lighter than most Marigold I have seen. When I used a dark background for my photos, it made the egg plate look clear. So I have also taken a couple of photos on a white background so that the color can be seen.
The egg dish is 11 1/8 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches high. There are
hollows for 15 deviled eggs and some space in the center for relishes or
condiments. It weighs 2 pounds 11 ounces before packing for shipping.
This deviled egg plate is in good condition. There are no cracks or scratches. There is a small chip on the outer edge of one of the egg hollows, that took off the end of one of the small scallops there. It is 1/8" wide by 1/8" long. There is a minuscule chip on the edge of another egg hollow that's just slightly over 1/16" long. There are a couple of minuscule nicks too small to measure, on the next egg hollow and some roughness on the hollow after that, where 4 small scallops have several minuscule nicks. Another egg hollow has a tiny chip about 1/8" long, and there are some minuscule nicks too small to measure on the following egg hollows.
On the inner edge of the rim there are 2 minuscule chips. One is in the center of the rim of the egg hollow, and is roughness about 1/8" long. The other is on one of the points between two egg hollows and is less than 1/16" long. Except for the very first chip mentioned, none of these are visible until you feel them and direct bright light to them. There is also a manufacturing quirk, where a discoloration in the glass looks like a very light gray film going from the middle of one egg hollow to about 5 beads from the edge of the center. This is in the glass. It's not really noticeable unless you look for it. (Can be seen at about the 8/9:00 o'clock position in my 2nd photo.)
