Item description
Divided by the Delaware River, Easton, PA, and Phillipsburg, NJ, were experiencing a period of significant growth and transformation at the turn of the twentieth century as the nation was enjoying great prosperity after the developments of the industrial revolution transformed the American economy. The expansion of rail lines during the latter portion of the nineteenth century had allowed the region to grow, and immigrants from across Western Europe and the American South had established numerous communities and neighborhoods based along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. Easton was a pivotal military center during the American Revolution and shares a rich history with Phillipsburg that dates back to the original settlers from England and France.
This bird's eye perspective was produced by noted American lithography company Landis Alsop, founded in 1899, making this panoramic map among the firm's first works. Easton was the home of a medical center that was crucial to the Continental Armies' success in the Revolutionary War. Construction of the Lehigh Canal began in 1818 and connected the two cities creating a bustling metropolitan area that attracted immigrants from across Eastern and Western Europe that established thriving neighborhoods and communities based on cultural traditions, many of which exist to this day.
Bird's eye perspectives were created as marketing materials to entice residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic buildings, economic opportunities, and natural resources. By 1900 the region had expanded considerably, and this is truly a piece of American cartographical history.
