Item description
Located some ten miles east of the Great Salt Lake, Ogden City is Utah's eighth largest city and has been a sister city to Hof, Germany, since 1954. Originally founded by trapperMiles Goodyear in 1846, this depiction shows the city's significant growth and transformation as the American West grew and developed following the expansion of railroads into the region in the following years following the conclusion of the American Civil War. In 1869 a major junction of the Transcontinental Railroad was installed in the city, leading to its motto, "You can't get anywhere without coming to Ogden."
This bird's eye perspective was produced and published by the prominent American lithographer Eli Sheldon Glover who produced numerous panoramic maps capturing views of the American West throughout his prolific career. Glover's unique style and distinctive aesthetic, as well as his careful attention to detail, immediately transport the viewer back in time and create an indelible bond between the past and present. Bird's eye perspectives were produced as marketing materials to entice residents and merchants alike by featuring prominent civic features and economic opportunities. Because they are not illustrated to scale, the illustrators often took liberties to make their work stand out.
Ogden is situated in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains and on the banks of the Weber River and attracts tourists eager to explore the outdoors. The Wasatch Mountains run some 160 miles through central Utah and offered a source of fresh water for early European settlers.
