Item description
Founded as a village in 1782, Bedford City came to be known as "The World's Best Little Town" and is located between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the north and Smith Mountain Lake to the south. Its enduring legacy, heritage, culture are among the oldest in the nation, and Bedford City lies in the heart of the Piedmont region. The Colony of Virginia was established in 1607 by the London Company and was the first permanent colony in North America. Bedford City is the County Seat and the region's home to the nationally protected James River Face Wilderness, Jefferson National Forest, and the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway.
The region long attracted immigrants from England, Ireland, Germany, and other Western European countries looking to establish farms and mills in the fertile soil. These immigrants founded communities along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day.
Produced and illustrated by prolific American lithographer Henry Wellge, this birds-eye perspective shows Bedford City in a period of economic prosperity and growth. As the nation approached the turn of the century, the so-called Gilded Age was spurring numerous opportunities for economic growth across the country. Birdseye perspectives were produced to attract workers and merchants alike by featuring prominent civic features. These illustrations were displayed in a show of pride by residents and distributed through rail stations to showcase towns and cities across the United States. The immediately recognizable style and distinctive aesthetic instantly transport the viewer back intimate, creating an indelible bond.
Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
