Item description
Vintage 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy copy photograph (not a vintage original photo printed at the time it was taken) of SHIRLEY TEMPLE AND JOHN AGAR. The famous Hollywood husband-and-wife are depicted in their home as they pose together on a sofa. Printed most likely in the 1950s or 1960s, it is in very fine- condition with light signs of random wear along portions of the edges and two scratches on Agar's image (one of which just misses his face). The image quality is very sharp with fine detail and great contrast.
In 1943, 15-year-old Temple met John Agar (1921–2002), an Army Air Corps sergeant, physical training instructor, and member of a Chicago meat-packing family when he was asked to escort her to a Hollywood party. Agar made his film debut as Temple's love interest in Fort Apache (1948), a John Ford western for RKO starring John Wayne and Henry Fonda. He was reunited with Temple for his second film, a suffragette drama entitled Adventure in Baltimore (1949), also for RKO, which was a huge flop. She married him at age 17 on September 19, 1945, before 500 guests in an Episcopal ceremony at Wilshire Methodist Church in Los Angeles. On January 30, 1948, Temple bore a daughter, Linda Susan. The marriage became troubled and Temple sued for divorce on the grounds of mental cruelty in 1949 and they were divorced on December 7, 1950. After the divorce, Agar had little contact with his daughter or with Temple. Agar remarried in 1951 to model Loretta Barnett Combs (1922–2000).
