L'Occhio e lo Spirito' รจ l'ultimo scritto che Merleau-Ponty potรฉ portare a termine. Andrรฉ Chastel gli aveva chiesto un contributo per il primo numero di "Art de France". Egli ne fece un saggio, al quale consacrรฒ la gran parte dell'estate nell'anno (1960) che doveva essere quello delle sue ultime vacanze. Stabilitosi, per due o tre mesi, nella campagna provenzale, Merleau-Ponty reinterroga la visione, e al tempo stesso la pittura. O piuttosto, egli la interroga quasi fosse la prima volta, come se tutte le sue opere precedenti non pesassero sul suo pensiero, ovvero pesassero troppo, in modo tale che egli dovette dimenticarle per riconquistare la pienezza dell'incantamento.
