An infant child living with residual polio in a cloistered (sheltered) life was selected to be given research therapy. This post-polio program was picked by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth KS to see if polio wracked individuals could be rehabilitated to become self-sufficient enough to live, at best a normal life. After years of this “sheltered life”, the author began survival training at 5-1/2 years. Moved to a hospital school for an education and more physical therapy. The move for which the author was totally unprepared, for the next 4 years, life was at time humorous or ho-hum, and at times perilously close to tragic. For 10 years the author struggled for an identity as an infant, a child and a young teen. This is not to say that there aren’t other similar victims, except to point out that the authors search was compounded by the onslaught of debilitating polio from an infancy of nine months. Many young lives were claimed each year and those who lived would be partially to completely paralyzed. This was the author, who would find himself at a time when uncertainty itself was the future. A time when formative years were needed to learn to overcome and survive.
