Item description
Vintage original 7 x 9.5 in. US double-weight matte publicity photograph of silent film actor CHARLES RAY c.1918. This photograph was taken by Carpenter of LA and depicts him in an interior studio shot. This photograph was signed in black ink by Charles Ray. It is in very fine condition.
Silent Cinema Inc. (the seller here) guarantees the authenticity of Charles Ray's signature.
Ray portrayed simple unaffected country bumpkins in silent rural melodramas. Unfortunately, Ray let Hollywood turn him into a headstrong egotist. Alienating most producers, he put-up his own money to finance a major feature called The Courtship of Myles Standish (1923). The film was a miserable failure that wiped out Ray's fortune and his comeback attempts were hampered by the advent of the sound picture.
