Item description
U.S. NEW JERSEY, NATIONAL GUARD, WATERVLIET ARSENAL, MODEL 1874, CARTRIDGE BOX, 2nd PATTERN
Made by the Watervliet Arsenal, this original item is the 2nd pattern style and was designed to hold cartridges for the US M1873 Trapdoor Rifle chambered in .45-70 Government. This is the second pattern box, indicated by the presence of the brass corner staples and tab escutcheon. This pattern would remain in use throughout the Indian Wars period and Spanish American War. The box remains in good to very good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. The leather shows crazing and drying, and flaking of the finish from age. Webbing is all intact and hardware has just a hint of verdigris. Has the soft canvas cartridge loops and bellows. The 20 interior canvas cartridge pockets are in nice condition. They are soft and pliable and not stiff or torn and not stretched out. Markings; Watervliet Arsenal on closure tab. There is the storage compartment for the take-down tool on the right side. Workers at the Watervliet Arsenal demonstrated the ease of producing a bulge in the side of the box to create a pocket for the rifle tool and added a piece of material on the inside to secure it. Brass New Jersey National Guard Box Plate is secure. Produced at the Watervliet Arsenal in West Troy, NY. Overall, a very nice box.
