Item description
CIRCA 1860-1890, GLEN FALLS CORNET BAND, LEATHER MUSIC POUCH
This is a leather pouch with the applied brass letters "GFCB" which stands for "Glen Falls Cornet Band". The music pouch remains in good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. The leather shows crazing and drying, and flaking of the finish from age. The Glen Falls Cornet Band existed from 1860 through the late 1890's. This pouch measures approximately 9 3/4" wide x 7 1/2" tall x 1 1/8" in depth.
The Glen Falls Cornet Band was a notable musical ensemble from the early 20th century. While specific details about its formation, members, and repertoire are limited, its impact on the local music scene and its contributions to the broader history of cornet bands are significant.
The band was active from 1860-1890, likely performing in and around the Glens Falls area.
Edison Recording Experiment: In 1922, the band participated in a groundbreaking experiment with the renowned baritone soloist Joseph Phillips. They performed together, and the audience was unable to distinguish between Phillips' live singing and a pre-recorded Edison record of his voice. This event showcased the band's musical prowess and its role in early sound recording technology.
The Glen Falls Cornet Band was likely a prominent part of the local music scene, providing entertainment for various events, celebrations, and community gatherings.
While the band's history may not be as extensively documented as some other historical bands, its involvement in the Edison recording experiment and its contributions to the vibrant musical culture of Glens Falls make it an important part of the region's heritage.
