Item description
Blue Wild Indigo (Baptisia australis) - 35 Seeds
Features:
Also Known As: Blue False Indigo
Heirloom
Non-GMO
American Grown Seeds
Perennial
USDA Zones: 3-9
Description:
Also known as False Indigo, this native plant was historically sought after for the blue dye made from its vibrant flowers. A hardy perennial and member of the pea family, Blue Wild Indigo produces eye-catching blue, pea-like blooms followed by dark, glossy seed pods. Thriving in cooler climates, this shrub-like plant grows upright, making it a striking addition to any garden. It requires at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to thrive, and its beautiful, glossy leaf pattern adds a unique texture to the garden.
Planting Instructions:
Direct Sowing: Blue Wild Indigo does not transplant well, so it's best to sow seeds directly in the garden.
Seed Preparation (Scarification): To scarify the seeds, pour hot water (150F) over the seeds and allow them to soak overnight.
Planting: In late fall, plant 2-3 seeds per hole, 1/8 inch deep, spaced 24-36 inches apart. For spring planting, mix scarified seeds with moist sand and store them in the refrigerator for 10 days before sowing.
Germination: After the cold stratification period, germination typically occurs within 15-20 days.
