COVER: Front Cover: The Adoration of the Magi, Ca. 1445, tempera on wood panel,
by Era Angelico and Fra Filippo Lippi. Courtesy National Gallery of Art, Wash-
ington, D.C., Samuel H. Kress Collection.
RICHARD MILLER: ESSENCE OF THE HUMAN FORM,
by Jennifer Place.
Since the age of five, Richard Miller has been exploring the richness of
the human figure in three-dimensional form. Seeking to get the essence
of the figure in wax and bronze, Miller attempts to eliminate anything that
will distract from its purity. His methods of achieving this are described.
JOSEPH PICCILLO'S GAME STRUCTURES,
by Diane Cochrane.
A series of drawings the artist calls "game structures" are bewildering
and compelling. Strange images grouped in a puuling juxtaposition
create an unexpected sense of anxiety.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE,
by Walter Gonske.
This fine young watercolorist packed up his gear and moved from New
York City to Taos, New Mexico. He's been painting the Southwest ever
since, capturing the sharp, clear light and the details so characteristic of
the New Mexican terrain.
CHAIM SOUTINE: MASTER OF THE LOADED BRUSH,
by Alfred Werner.
What was the driving force behind the agonized portaits and frenzied
landscapes and still lifes of Chaim Soutine (1893-1943)? This is the story
of an artist whose internal sufferings created paintings that are being
widely celebrated this year.
FRANK MASON: ALLEGIANCE TO THE OLD MASTERS,
by James S. Melanson.
As an artist and as a teacher, Frank Mason is dedicated to the styles and
techniques of the Old Masters. Permanence has been a major preoccu-
pation for him, and his research has drawn attention to the problems of
restoration and has had a major impact on his own methods of painting.
THE PICKUP TECHNIQUE,
by George Solonevich,
A pictorial demonstration of an innovative way to handle oil paint.
PROFESSIONAL PAGE by Betty Chamberlain.
TECHNICAL PAGE by Ralph Mayer.
