COVER
Laurie Bagley's dynamic artist's impression of Wing Commander Guy Gibson's initial attack on Moehne Dam on May 16th, 1943 serves to emphasise the skilled team work required in this operation. The special spinning bomb had to be released at precisely 60 ft. altitude and at a predetermined position in front of the dam face. To maintain correct height, two Aitimetric spot lights were mounted, one just inside the bomb bay on the front bulkhead or in the front camera mounting on the port underside and the other in the intended position of the ventral guns. When the observer could see through the starboard cockpit blister that the lights were making a figure of eight, the aircraft was at correct height above water. A description of this Special Lancaster and other operations will be found on page 345 of this issue.
