THE COVER A U. S. Army Marksmanship Training Unit instructor from Ft. Benning, Ga., demonstrates the standing position with the M14 Service rifle during the Small Arms Firing School (SAFS) at the 1964 National Matches, Camp Perry, Ohio. In 1964, for the first time, all SAFS classroom instruction was given with the 7.62 mm. M14 rifle. The M14 will be used in the 1965 SAFS. Active duty and reserve military competitors use either cal. .30 M1 or M14 rifles in the firing phase of the the School and in the national high power rifle championship matches, as determined by the competitors' Service. Civilians may fire either rifle. The M14 rifle used in competition is modified to be semi-automatic only (the standard model can be fully automatic), and the National Match model embodies engineering improvements and those refinements which have been proven in the National Match M1.
