THE COVER Since early times man has decorated his personal weapons to enhance their appearance and express his pride of ownership. Typical is the transformation of an otherwise utilitarian firearm by skilled engraving and inlaying of precious metals. As an art form, the engraving and inlaying of firearms has been practiced since the latter part of the 14th century. The Colt .45 National Match Automatic Pistol on this month's cover is owned by Colt's and is in their traveling exhibit. Manufactured in the early 1960's, the gun bears serial number 10029 NM, and is valued at $2150. The left side of the gun is inlaid with a gold elk and mountain lion on the slide, with a flying eagle on the ivory grip. The engraving is by Alvin A. White of East Sandwich, Mass. White began his engraving career at the age of 15 when he entered the Rhode Island School of Design, and at the age of 19 he engraved his first gun. The 4"x5" transparency is by Harry C. Knode, Dallas, Tex. Camera was a Linhof Technika, with Ektachrome Type B film, exposed lh second at F/32, using 3200 K lights.
