Item description
Located in the foothills of the Shawangunk Mountains at the Eastern terminus of the iconic Appalachian Mountain Range, Middletown was experiencing a period of significant growth and transformation in the early parts of the twentieth century. First incorporated in 1888, by 1921 Middletown had become a regional economic leader thanks to manufacturing plants and had become a significant producer of furniture and shoes. Its population grew as access was expanded with the establishment of the New York, Ontario, and Western Railway as well as the Erie Railroad. It would continue to experience significant prosperity through World War II.
Produced and published under Oakley Hoopes Bailey’s Hughes Fowler imprint, this stunning depiction shows Middletown in a period of significant growth and transformation. Bailey focused his work on the Northeast and was among the most prolific producer of birds eye perspectives. The signature style and ornate flourishes, and attention to detail are characteristic of his work and are immediately recognizable. Panoramic maps were used to entice residents and merchants to cities across America and featured prominent civic features and economic opportunities. They were widely popular, and this work marks a piece produced as their popularity began to wane due to advances in aviation and aerial photography.
This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history that captures Middletown in a significant period of its rich history. As the Nation became more developed and modernized, numerous buildings were being constructed, which are highlighted in the detailed insets; a classic Bailey touch.
Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
