Item description
rare jug made to Commemorate the Death of General Gordon "Betrayed Jan 26 1885." There is a portrait medallion of
the General in the center of the jug and to the sides are molded banners and text. The maker is Doulton Lambeth and the jug is about 7-1/2"'or 19cm high It dates from 1885. There are some small manufacturing faults but no chips, cracks, or repairs.
Doulton Lambeth set a new standard for
commemorative jugs with the one that honored General Gordon after he
was martyred in 1885. Gordon was known for his service in the Crimean War, China service during the Opium Wars era, and the campaign in Khartoum. He was considered a military hero in 19th century England. A fabulous high-water mark for Victorian celebratory ceramic ware.
Hard to find item, rarely comes up for sale outside of the United Kingdom.
Item Location: Back Warehouse, Center Left, U57.
