Item description
Paw Paw Susquehanna and Shenandoah (Asimina triloba) – Set of 2 Plants. Grafted Paw Paw plants are approximately 8"-12" tall, potted. U.S.D.A. zones 5–8
? The largest native fruit in North America, the pawpaw is an easy-to-grow tree with a modest size and lush tropical appearance. It thrives in full to partial sun and produces deep purple spring blooms that give way to clusters of large, green oblong fruit. As fall approaches, the fruit ripens with a rich fragrance and yellow hue. The creamy, custard-like flavor is often compared to banana or mango. High in protein, vitamins, and minerals, pawpaw fruit can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks.
? Two different cultivars are required for cross-pollination and fruit set. This set includes one plant each of the following Peterson varieties:
Susquehanna – A mid-to-late season variety prized for its large fruit, few seeds, and rich, sweet flavor. The firm, buttery flesh makes it one of the most desirable selections for fresh eating.
Shenandoah – A widely admired early-season pawpaw that produces fruit up to one pound in size. Its smooth texture and mellow sweetness have made it a favorite among growers and home orchardists alike.
? Pawpaws typically begin bearing fruit in 2–3 years and can yield up to 30 pounds per tree. They are highly resilient to pests and diseases and do not require pesticide use. Plants are 1 year old. From September through April, trees are sent bare-root with roots wrapped in moist media. From April through September, trees are sent potted in soil.
Orders to California will be sent bare-root per state regulations.
Dormant plants will be sent during winter months.
? Best planted in loose, well-drained soils with moderate moisture and partial shade. Once established, trees can adjust to full sun. Avoid compacted or extremely dry conditions. With its long taproot, transplanting mature pawpaws can be difficult, so choose a permanent site when planting. Works beautifully as an understory tree and offers fruit for both wildlife and humans.
