Item description
? One rooted plant of Akebia quinata (Chocolate Vine), 1 year old.
? During summer, you will receive a rooted plant in a small plastic container with soil, sent in a box with a tracking number within the United States. During winter dormancy, plants are sent with roots wrapped in moist media and plastic. Akebia quinata is a deciduous climber that can reach up to 39 feet in height at a fast rate.
? This plant is hardy in U.S.D.A. zones 4-8 and is well-suited to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, as long as they are well-drained. It can tolerate acidic, neutral, and alkaline soils and grows in full shade, partial shade, or full sun. Preferring moist soil, Akebia quinata produces monoecious flowers in April-May, with seeds ripening from September-October.
? The fruit is edible when raw, offering a mild sweetness with a soft, juicy texture. The flavor can be enhanced with lemon juice. The bitter skin is sometimes fried and eaten. Young shoots can be used in salads or pickled, while the leaves are often used as a tea substitute.
? Propagation is possible through seeds, cuttings, root cuttings, and layering. Seeds germinate best when fresh, though stored seeds require a month of cold stratification and may be more difficult to sprout. Half-ripe cuttings taken in summer and softwood cuttings taken in spring may be slow to root. Root cuttings in December, grown in a warm greenhouse, are another method. Layering is highly effective, as plants naturally self-layer and can be dug up and transplanted easily.
? Your order will arrive in good condition. If any issues occur upon receiving order, contact us the same day with a detailed description and photos so we can assist you.
