But one night in February 1983, SHERGAR was abducted; armed and masked men burst into his stables in Newbridge, County Kildare, and forced head groom, Jim Fitzgerald, to load the horse onto a vehicle...SHERGAR was never again seen. Twenty years later, the case remains open and Irish police continue to receive new leads on who may have seized the champion stallion; and through the years there have been numerous reported sightings of SHERGAR, but none have proved conclusive. In 2000, DNA tests were carried out on the skull of a horse found buried in County Kerry - but it wasn't SHERGAR and the investigative file continues to grow even thicker. A major new investigation into what happened to kidnapped Epsom Derby winner SHERGAR is presented in this latest expose' about the disappearance of the legendary racehorse. Others interviewed include Chief Superintendent Sean Feely, who is now in charge of the SHERGAR file, and head groom Jim Fitzgerald, who until now has never broken his silence on the events of that fateful night in 1983. Senior Garda officers believe the horse was kidnapped by Northern paramilitaries and killed only days later. Garda Chief Superintendent Sean Feeley, reveals that Garda uncovered a bullet magazine for a specialist sub-machine gun at the scene of the kidnapping in Newbridge, County Kildare. It was immediately linked to a gun being used in attacks on the British army in the North prompting speculation that the IRA was behind the operation. This is the first time that the southern authorities have made public this evidence and Feeley's claims will put further pressure on insurers, who refused to pay out to SHERGAR's owners following the stallion's disappearance. One shareholder, Newbridge vet and bloodstock veteran Stan Cosgrove, 77, is still seeking over 1 million in insurance money from British underwriters the Norwich Union.
