Item description

On DVD or VHS: An exhilarating documentary that captures the magic of the Derby, of Kentucky, and of racing. From the infield to Millionaires' Row, the Kentucky Derby is more than a horse race. It's a boisterous snapshot of America, history and folklore, culture and capitalism rolled into one. Racing personalities, the jockeys' room, and some vintage footage of the past are recalled. See entire racing footage from the excitement and disappointment of ARAZI's loss to long-shot, 'LIL E TEE in the 1992 Derby to the dramatic win of SEA HERO in 1993. Interesting interviews of some of the oldest families who've dominated racing are included; a rare and personal interview with PAUL MELLON, owner of SEA HERO, is conducted at his Rokeby Farm Stable in Upperville, Virginia, in which he talks about how the breeding industry is in trouble because of its commercialization and how the old, and established families such as the FIRESTONE’s, WHITNEY's and SLOAN’s who set the standards for breeding good horses are getting out of racing because the new generation carrying on their family name sadly does not share this passion for racing. In the world of Thoroughbred breeding and racing, everything starts and ends in the breeding shed and horse racing is the proving ground for the various breeding theories. A visit with JOHN GAINES of Gainesway Farm enlightens the viewers to ideas about which equine families or physical types will cross well together and a rare breeding scene is shown of stallion, RIVERMAN, covering the mare, GLOWING TRIBUTE, by GRAUSTARK. A look back at CITATION and memories of SECRETARIAT are recalled with interviews of his owner, PENNY CHENERY, and groom, EDDIE SWEAT expressing his sadness at how he still misses "BIG RED" and of the special moments and relationship that they shared. Also included is nostalgic racing and retirement footage of SECRETARIAT at Claiborne Farm and of some of his fans visiting him there. If you can't make it to the Kentucky Derby, this is the next best thing! 60 Minutes. Thanks for looking. Winning bidder pays $6 shipping and handling.
