Item description

Antique Real Photo Postcard, circa 1930s. Depicting gondola-like boats in Xochimilco, Mexico built for carrying passengers on the canal system created by the Aztec people. Divided back, unused. Condition: This is an original photo postcard, not a copy or reproduction. It is in excellent condition aside from some album remnants on reverse side. Comments: In southern Mexico City, a gritty working-class neighborhood gives way to the famous canals of Xochimilco, the last remnants of a vast water transport system built by the Aztecs. Colorful gondola-like boats take visitors on cruises while food vendors, artisans and mariachi bands float past. The atmosphere is festive, especially on weekends. This canal and chinampa system, as a vestige of the area's pre-Hispanic past, has made Xochimilco a World Heritage Site. In 1950, Paramahansa Yogananda in his Autobiography of a Yogi wrote that if there were a scenic beauty contest, Xochimilco would get the first prize.
