When Kate's dear friend Milly Theale falls ill, eminent physician Sir Luke Strett cautions Kate that the ailing Milly must be denied nothing or she will die. Soon Milly develops a fascination for Densher and, in keeping with Street's dictum, Kate uses Merton and Millie together.
