Item description

This is a 8 x 10 black and white photograph of the USS RANGER CV-61, AN OIL TANKER AND A RUSSIAN TRAWLER The USS Ranger spent the 1976 4TH Of July Bicentennial in Singapore and upon leaving received orders to proceed to Uganda for evacuating civilians. The ship and it escorts headed for the Straights Of Malacca, but waited until night so the ships could go through in the dark to the Indian Ocean and headed for Africa. Since the ship was low on fuel and there were no US Navy Oilers available, they contracted with a civilian tanker for fuel. While the two ships were transfer oil, over the horizon coming straight at the ships was a Russian spy trawler which made a U-turn and sailed in formation. Before going half way, the emergency ended and the Ranger returned to Subic Bay in the Philippines. The picture show the three ships together, The USS Ranger and the Tanker together, with the Russian spy trawler just before making its U-Turn. A little bit of history. This unique photo was from the ships photo lab and I don't know how many were made or survive. I was able to get one because I worked in the Intelligence Division.
