Item description
Self-bound Album:
William Hogarth Engravings 1806-7-8-9
David Jennings (Binder) 1968
A very unique item: a self-bound album of actual William Hogarth engravings from 1806-1809 (most published by Longmans, Hurst, Rees Orme). The collector/binder notes the album contains 28 plates from 5 series (Times of the Day, Marriage a la Mode, Industry and Idleness, Stages of Cruelty, and Rake's Progress) and dates it 1964. A note is then added: "In 1968 completed the set - also added [?] more plates making 38 plates." Most engravings are complete full pages though a few are cut out and pasted to paper.
In addition to the 38 engravings from the early 1800s, there is an additional rather risque engraving laid in from 1821, entitled "Feeding Poultry".
Green leather over marble boards.
