U.S. ARMY, CAVALRY, MODEL 1885 WATERING BRIDAL BIT AND REINS As issued to each trooper to complete his inventory of horse equipment, this Model 1885 Watering Bit and Reins was used in conjunction with the halter to control his mount enroute for the daily watering of the animals. Fitted with permanently sewn on, full length black leather reins, the bit is a simple snaffle equipped with two snaps hooks to attach to the halter cheek strap squares. While showing evidence of issue and use, the metal surfaces are all clear and smooth with no corrosion or pitting. The leather reins are smooth and supple with some minor flaking or crazing due to age. This would be attached to halter and acts a bridle. On the prairie the unsaddled horse is ridden to the river, watered, ridden back to camp and picketed. Also used in recruit training before advancing to use of the curb bit.
