Item description
The pictures pretty much tell it all. It's a very unusual water pipe both in material and design. It iwas hand-crafted in stoneware by John Mills of Nashville, Brown County, Indiana. He is still active and recently moved back to the same workshop/store where T. bought it in 1968. T. recalls that the pipe smoked very well. He smoked tobacco in it, but it being then the Age of Acquarius and the Flower Child, these pipes were doubtless used to smoke about anything that could be smoked in a water pipe. This particular example was last smoked prior to 1986 when T. gave up tobacco in all it's forms. He started collecting and smoking pipes in 1956 when he was 16. He continued to smoke them as a collegian, an Infantry lieutenant, a grad student, and an employee, husband, and father. He continues to miss the look, the feel in the hands, the grip of the teeth, and the smell of pipe smoke. Nostalgia. PhD program in Middle Eastern history at Indiana University. Looking at the leaves in Brown Couinty in the fall. Hickory nut pie at the Nashville House. Pecan pie now. Nobody left poor enough to crack and shell hickory nuts.
