The stories in this 275-page book are "Marse Chan: A Tale of Old Virginia", "Unc' Edinburg: A Plantation Echo", "Meh Lady: A Story of the War", "Ole 'Stracted", "No Haid Pawn" and "Polly: A Christmas Recollection". For the first time in this edition, the stories are accompanied by 25 full-page plates by well-known illustrators Howard Pyle, A.B. Frost, A. Castaigne, W.T. Smedley, B.W. Clinedinst and C.S.Rinehart. The top page edges are gilt, the others are rough and uncut, as was common in the 1890s. The spine of this copy is faded, there are a very few torn page corners and a Christmas gift dedication (dated "'96") appears on the ffep,. But overall this is a nicely preserved copy.
