Item description
The World of Music: An Illustrated Encyclopedia (1963 Complete in Four Hardcover Volumes w/ Slipcase, 1st American Edition)
? Original Editor: Kjell Bloch Sandved (1922-2015)
? Book Design: Howard Morris
? Publisher: Abradale Press New York City, NY U.S.A. 1963
This work is based on The World of Music, edited by Kjell B. Sandved, originally published in Norway, but widely translated and in use throughout Europe. Abradale Press changed the original focus to highlight North America and thus to produce the First American Edition.
These volumes were completely revised, enlarged, and expanded for American Readers. Whether the reader is a professional, student or amateur, he/ she will find The World of Music a storehouse of fascinating information. The articles and information in this book are in alphabetical order and there are cross references providing further information to the reader. Lavishly illustrated with B W photographs, performance brochures and musical notation.
Beyond the authors who wrote the Norwegian version, there are 10 additional individual authors cited for this American Edition as well as 6 individuals from 4 institutions who provided additional illustrations in this version. Howard Morris (of Abradale Press?) designed this set. No biographic material for Mr. Morris nor historic information about the publisher was found.
Kjell Bloch Sandved (1922-2015) was a Norwegian born publisher, author, lecturer and nature photographer, perhaps most known for his Butterfly Alphabet which contains pictures of Butterfly Wings resembling all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet as well Arabic numerals 0 to 9. Mr. Sandved migrated to the U.S.A. in the early 1960s and worked as a curator in the Smithsonian Museum for over 30 years.
Each of the 4 volumes has black leather spines with red title boxes and gold lettering also has each board replicating a portion of music themed work of art. Page numbering runs sequentially without regard to the volume. The entire set is housed in a slipcover box. Specifics for each volume:
- Volume I, A to D. vii+1 thru 384. Front Cover by Edgar Degas (1834-1917) ?Cafe-Concert a Les Ambassadeurs?, Back Cover by E. Degas ?Ballerina and Lady with a Fan.? Chip missing from head of spine.
- Volume II, E to L. iv + 385 thru 780. Front Cover by Edgar Degas (1834-1917) ?Father Listening to Pagans,? Back Cover by Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) ?M. Gaston Dufy at the Piano.? Closed tear at head of spine. Glued repair.
- Volume III, M to R. iv + 781 thru 1184. Front Cover by Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) ?Mezzetin,? Back Cover by Michelangelo (1475-1564) ?Sistine Chapel.? No flaws noted.
- Volume IV, S to Z iv + 1185 thru 1516. Front Cover by Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) ?Two Girls at the Piano.? Back Cover by A. Renoir ?Girl with a Mandolin.? Wear at head and foot of spine.
Expensively produced books used a heavy weight paper. Always privately owned, no ownership markings of any type. Unfortunately, this set has been exposed to moisture while in slipcase. The slipcase is in poor condition, but the books show no signs of damage except as noted above. Interiors are tight, clean, and unmarked. Volumes open as seldom, if ever, read.
? Size: 4to - over 9 - 12" tall, 1,535pp.
? Condition: Good 4 volume Hardcover Set in Slipcase ? Always privately owned. 1st American Edition, printing not specified.
Copyright 1963. Original edition text copyright held by K. B. Sandved. These copies do not specify the print-run info. Printed in U.S.A. LCCN: 63-14095. No CIP, ISBN, nor MSR.
