Item description

6" x 8.75", 347 page hardcover with dustjacket titled THE THIRD TEXAS CAVALRY IN THE CIVIL WAR by Douglas Hale/ University of Oklahoma Press, ISBN # 0-8061-2462-8, First printing, Copyright 1993 / This is an excellent analysis of why Texas left the Union and joined the Confederacy. The author gives the facts and does not overload the book of personal opinions and bias of the circumstances that led up to the Civil War. The author also gives an excellent background of the leaders of the 3rd Texas Cavalry who were mostly well off financially when the war began. The 3rd Texas Cavalry was not in the eastern theatre of the Civil War. The regiment fought mainly in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and the surrounding states. The men were definitely experienced horsemen when the war began and fought valiantly. The hardships the regiment went thru the war was not isolated to their regiment alone. Confederate soldiers had to face famine, disease, cheap clothing, desertion, and come to the reality that they were not going to be victorious in winning the war. However, these men fought until after General Robert E. Lee surrender at Appomattox Court House. Though the war was officially over, the majority of the regiment still had a lot of Confederate Pride and were not sorry that they lost the war. This is an excellent read for anyone interested in why Texas joined the Confederacy and the history of this hard-fought regiment. Highly Recommended! The book is complete and in VERY GOOD condition with some overall wear mainly to the dustjacket.
