Excerpt from Book: In entitling this book THE RELIGIONS OF DEMOCRACY we have in mind the belief in the worth and rights of the individual which characterizes all three of the faiths with which it deals. Based upon religion, it repudiates all forms of tyranny. This affirmation of the supreme importance of the individual lies at the foundation of all true democracy. This volume presents in outline the three faiths to one or the other of which the citizens of the United States, for the most part, adhere. It does not engage in controversy, and the writers make no effort to justify the beliefs and practices which they report. Nor is there any purpose to make converts from one faith to another, but merely to state and interpret the faith of each group to other groups in the interest of understanding. If Jews, Catholics and Protestants are to live happily and cooperatively together it is imperative that they should understand one another. Such understanding will disclose, on the one hand, the limitations and, on the other, the possibilities of cooperation. As Americans all, they have the same obligations as citizens of the one country and must work cordially together for the common welfare within the communities which are their common homes. Each must stand for the rights of all. Together they must resist the prejudices that would divide them and set them in hostile camps.
