Several of his works are on permanent display at the Metropolitan, Brooklyn, and Albany Museums of Art. In 1938, Mr. Zaidenberg published his revolutionary techniques, which were based on his theory that a person who could write the alphabet could combine simple shapes and draw. He was also the first teacher at New York University to use nude models in his life drawing classes. He created murals for more than 100 hotels in Miami Beach, for the cruise ship Rotterdam and for the St. Moritz Hotel in Manhattan. During World War II he made animated films for the Army Signal Corps. In this book, Zaidenberg sweeps away all uncertainties about painting. Combining written explanations with his own drawings and with illustrations by the masters of painting, he presents a book mainly concerned with conceiving pictures. The book begins with a list of materials and equipment suited to the beginner's needs. Mr. Zaidenberg recommends oil paints for the novice and gives several reasons for this choice. Because there is no single correct way to use oil paints, the beginner is free to experiment and develop his own particular style. As a guide in these experiments, the author describes the use and effects of painting with some unusual tools, including paint rollers and the palette knife, as well as with the more familiar brushes. Applying paint to canvas is only part of the process of creating worthwhile pictures. THE PAINTING OF PICTURES describes other important factors, such as composition, perspective, the use of the light and shadow, and the effects of color. Other chapters show how all these elements are used in painting still lifes, landscapes, and pictures of people. Arthur Zaidenberg's wide experience as an instructor and freelance artist made him well qualified to write a book such as this.
