The Five Percenters: Islam Hiphop and the Gods of New York Paperback by Knight, Michael Muhammad
FROM THE PERSONAL COLLECTION OF JAMES CHANCE
Advance Uncorrected Proof (Galley)
In good condition, no writing or marks on the cover or pages.
The Five Percenters traces the movement and evolution of the Nation of Gods and Earths, a group of former outcast black youth from the Nation of Islam's Harlem branch whose fractious beginnings have culminated in their subsequent struggle for legitimacy, in an account that cites their roles in the Attica prison revolt, the 1980s crack empires, and the careers of such figures as Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad, and rap star 50 Cent.
James Chance was the noted saxophone player, composer, and singer in the No Wave, Funk, and Jazz idioms. His bands The Contortions, James White and the Blacks, The Flaming Demonics, and Terminal City were groundbreaking fusions of funk, punk, and jazz. My name is David Siegfried, brother to James, and I can attest these items to be true and authentic.
James was an avid reader and read this book, possibly multiple times. This is an opportunity to have your own keepsake from James's personal collection. If you are interested in other items owned by James, please see my other listings.
