Item description

The Captain of the King's Guard by Commander E. H. Currey The Captain of the King's Guard Commander E. H. Currey New York: McBride, Nast Company, 1912 Six illustrations by W. H. C. Groome 399 pages The hinges are broken and the binding is weakening but all pages are present and attached. The pages are tanning and have brown age spots and several are corner creased. There are names and a date 1913 written on the free front end papers. The cover is very rubbed and edge worn, the hinges are bug damaged and the top of the spine is torn. The back cover has water stains. Fair. Hardcover. Chapter 1 Two Heretics at Segovia She had liquid brown eyes, and the sun striking through the leaves of the chestnut tree in the gardens of the palace in old Madrid turned her red-brown hair to a golden tint; her complexion was somewhat pale, but the texture of the skin was exquisite; while her lips were vivid, mutinous, bewitching; and if the mouth were slightly over large for perfect beauty, there were certainly few men among those who gazed with admiration at the Senorita Elvira de Guzman who would have wished those lips other than what they were--most certainly not he who now sat by her side, and was listening apparently with rapt attention to what she had to say. Ramon, Count of Calatrava, and captain of the King's Guard, was a noticeable figure in any company--on this occasion particularly so, as, having been in attendance on the king earlier in the day, he was dressed with unusual magnificence.
