TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN: It's hard to believe this American teen hit was released the same year as the British gothic horror 'Curse of Frankenstein'. They both used horrible mangled-face makeup for the monster but what a difference in the approach! As a cut-rate descendent of Dr. Frankenstein living in L.A., Whit Bissell creates a weight-lifting ugly faced monster in the basement. He keeps the monster a secret from his fiancee (Phyllis Coates - TV's 'Superman' Lois Lane) and throws his assistant to the alligators when he gets in the way. Whit then sends the monster out for a new head. A handsome teenager (Gary Conway, later on 'Land of the Giants') making out in his car is the surprised donor. Teenage Frankie foreshadows a new style of horror. Rare for its day, this ghoulish gem isn't afraid to do the fright thing: It displays a few hacked-up limbs to set the mood. And it knows that in horror, laughing matters. Its macabre humour is best typified by the classic lines: "Speak! You've got a civil tongue in your head. I know you have because I sewed it back in myself". I WAS a TEENAGE WEREWOLF: Young Michael Landon (TV's 'Bonanza', 'Little House on the Prairie') will never be forgotten as the troubled high school student turned into a snarling drooling hairy monster by Whit Bissell. No full moons or crucifixes are involved. Hypnotism causes the retrogressive transformation whenever Landon is startled. Like when the school bell rings while he's watching a girl hanging from the parallel bars in the gym. A trend-setting hit with rock 'n' roll, dancing, fistfights, and teen traumas. With Guy Williams (TV's 'Lost in Space') as a cop. Both features have tons of classic drive-in trailers before the film starts which are a lot of fun. These would be great in a Halloween party atmosphere where you and your friends could make-up your own 'Mystery Science Theatre 3000' quips.
