Item description

Tawny's Trick by Ina B. Forbus (1967 Hardcover w/o DJ) Author: Ina Bell Forbus (1901-1994) Illustrator: Ann Grifalconi Publisher: The Viking Press New York, NY U.S.A. 1967 Fiction about a careless, daydreaming 11-year-old girl who likes to take her horse to "her favorite clearing deep in the woods to think things out." There she meets and makes friends with "a beautiful and mysterious woman who came to play a little wooden pipe under the trees," and together they teach the horse to do a special "dance" to the tune of the woman's pipe, which ends up saving the life of both the horse and her younger sister. Ina Bell Forbus (1901-1994) was born in Scotland and moved to the United States when she was a child. She became a citizen upon her marriage to Sample Forbus in 1931. Forbus attended the University of Rochester and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1935 she and her husband bought an old grist mill on Cane Creek and converted it into a summer home. Mrs. Forbus often used the grist mill as a setting for her stories. Ann Grifalconi is an American author and illustrator of children's books. Born in New York, she studied art at the Cooper Union School of Art, where she received a certificate in advertising art in 1950. She was a runner-up for the 1987 Caldecott Medal for illustration. Ex-Library Hardcover has green cloth boards, front illustrated white lettering, spine white brown lettering, but no DJ. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked except for check-out envelope pasted to front paste-down. Square corners, minor scuffing. Size: 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall, 187pp Condition: Good Hardcover w/o DJ - Ex-Library, 3rd Printing Copyright 1965, date of 1st publication. This copy from 3rd printing January, 1967, printed in U.S.A. Rear cover states Viking Library Binding. LCCN: 65-13359. No ISBN nor MSR. Notes on Condition/Edition ratings: Fine – means like new, but any book produced over 10 years ago isn't “brand new” or even “new.” Booksellers needed some word to describe this... Like New – A new book, no marks no damage (except maybe remainder marks or shelf-wear) except not obtained directly from the publisher or in packaging from the publisher. Very Good – How you or I might take care of a book, closer to “as new” than standard. Might show ownership. Good – How someone else might take care of a book. Also referred to as “standard.” This is the most likely condition for books of this age title, shows the book has been read or previously owned. Acceptable – How a child, student or a librarian might take care of a book. (Either trying to make sure someone doesn't steal it by plastering ownership Copyrights 1970. Originally published by Follett Publishing Company under the title "THE GISMO." This Scholastic edition printed by permission in 1974. Stated from 1st print run, September, 1974. Printed in U.S.A. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. Scholastic catalog TX 2881.everywhere, filled it with copious notes or a book that has been damaged.) Poor – Combination of “acceptable” factors above. Most likely with water damage as well. Might have missing pages (you should ask). Near – Means “almost” in an optimistic sense. e.g., “Near Fine” means very good, but on the high end. 1st Thus – Unique somehow, maybe 1st paperback, new illustrator, misprint or even the 1st edition. A collector might desire this copy. Thanks for looking!
