There she meets and makes friends with "a beautiful and mysterious woman who came to play a little wooden pipe under the trees," and together they teach the horse to do a special "dance" to the tune of the woman's pipe, which ends up saving the life of both the horse and her younger sister. Ina Bell Forbus (1901-1994) was born in Scotland and moved to the United States when she was a child. She became a citizen upon her marriage to Sample Forbus in 1931. Forbus attended the University of Rochester and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1935 she and her husband bought an old grist mill on Cane Creek and converted it into a summer home. Mrs. Forbus often used the grist mill as a setting for her stories. Ann Grifalconi is an American author and illustrator of children's books. Born in New York, she studied art at the Cooper Union School of Art, where she received a certificate in advertising art in 1950. She was a runner-up for the 1987 Caldecott Medal for illustration.
