Item description
Vintage original Grosset Dunlap "Photoplay Edition" hardback book from the teens silent film drama, THE EAGLE'S MATE, released in 1914 by Paramount Pictures and directed by James Kirkwood.
Published by Grosset Dunlap, the front cover features beautful artwork affixed to the cover itself and depicts Mary Pickford and James Kirkwood. It consists of 300 pages with multiple full-page black-and-white photographs throughout. In addition, Both endpapers feature a two-page photographic spread from the film. It is in overall fine- condition.
The film starred Mary Pickford and was her first film working with the actor/director James Kirkwood. The film is based on a novel, The Eagle's Mate, by Anna Alice Chapin. Like many American films of the time, The Eagle's Mate was subject to cuts by city and state film censorship boards. For example, for the 1918 re-release of the film, the Chicago Board of Censors required cuts, in Reel 2, of all scenes where men fall after being shot, Reel 3, man tearing opponent's mouth in fight, and, Reel 5, Fisher shooting her husband.
A young girl, Anemone (Mary Pickford), who lives with her Aunt (Ida Waterman), is abducted by a crude family of Virginia mountain moonshiners. A fight between two of the young male relatives decides who will marry the girl. Lancer (James Kirkwood) is the winner and marries Anemone against her will. She is reunited some time later with her Aunt, but when she learns Lancer is in dire trouble, she returns and stays by his side, realizing she had always been in love with him.
