Item description

A historical persepctive of nineteenth century immigrants and the streets names that honor their contribution to the area. Adina De Zavala not only helped preserve the Alamo but she barricaded herself in the Alamo for four days to prevent destruction of the convent wall, an area of the Alamo where many men had died while protecting it. Eleanor Brackenridge, an advocate for women's rights, was the first registered female voter of Bexar County. John Coker fought in the battle of San Jacinto and was credited in part with the destruction of a bridge that prevented Santa Anna's troops from retreating. Lorenzo De Zavala and Jose Navarro were both signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico. Germany wanted to colonize Texas and beginning in 1842 members of a society purchased tens of thousands of acres and settled thousands of citizens in New Braunfels, Fredericksburg and Castroville. Come explore the rich history of not only San Antonio but also the many communities around the city and the families that helped make this great area what it is today.
