Roebuck "Pops" Staples (December 28, 1914 ? December 19, 2000), the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children. While the family name is Staples, the group used "Staple" commercially. The Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2018. They were also honored with a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail in Drew, Mississippi. In 2005, the group was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
