Catholic Gift St. Maximilian Kolbe with Priests in JapanRestored PhotographSt. Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941) was a Polish Franciscan priest most famous for volunteering to die in place of a stranger at the Auschwitz concentration camp. But he had many other accomplishments, including the formation of a monastery in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1931. In this exclusive restored photograph, St. Kolbe is seen with two Japanese priests and a third priest from Europe. The third priest has the most peaceful expression on his face, which comes out sharply in this restoration. Father Kolbe's expression is, as always, intense and serious. His Japanese priests seem equally as committed to the cause of Christ. Kolbe chose the location for the monastery on a side of the mountain considered undesirable by Shinto beliefs because it was not "the side best suited to be in tune with nature." When the atomic bomb dropped, the monastery was shielded from the blast by the mountain. It survived, as did the priests. They used it as an orphanage after the war because so many parents had died.
