It is native to tropical and southern Africa, but has become naturalized in other parts of the world. Chlorophytum comosum is easy to grow as a houseplant; variegated forms are the most popular. It can also be grown outdoors in the summer. The spider plant is considered one of the most adaptable of houseplants and the easiest to grow. This plant can grow in a wide range of conditions and suffers from few problems, other than brown tips. The spider plant is so named because of its spider-like plants, or spiderettes, which dangle down from the mother plant like spiders on a web. Available in green or variegated varieties, these spiderettes often start out as small white flowers attached to the mother plant. The spiderettes if cut off and planted in a pot will develop roots and can live on their own. We will send you spiderettes for you to start. Place them in a 3-4 inch pot with clean potting soil. Dampen the soil, keep the soil moist. And the plant will soon develop its own roots. Spiderettes are shipped in flat envelopes to keep costs low.
