Item description

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA `Land of colorful contrast` 1938 colour tinted concertina-type fold-out artwork depicting late 1930's Southern California. Rare item, and guaranteed to induce lengthy spells of sitting and staring and pondering `what on Earth happened to it all?...` 12 images, plus front and rear covers, all listed below, plus extra text page. All in excellent condition. Posted, with 1938-era Thomas Jefferson 3c postage stamp. The image details - Cover - Cheerful young western-style woman atop a pile of oranges, to set the scene. 3c stamp. Pen notation addressed to recipient in NY state. Rear - `Streamliner passing through a California Orange Grove`. Bold train design, big orange harvest forthcoming. `Wee Kirk of the Heather Glendale. Calif.`. Place of worship view. `Rainbow Pier and sky line. Long Beach. Calif.`. Waterside view. `El Paso de Los Angeles "The Pathway of the Angels" / Olvera Street Los Angeles California.`. Market day...make sure oranges are on the shopping list... `A Glimpse of Avalon Bay Catalina Island. California`. More nautical imagery. `Oranges and snow capped mountains.`. Grove and altitude-based imagery combine to good effect... `Westlake Park, Los Angeles. California.`. Time to put your feet up... `Beautiful homes in the Hollywood Hills, Hollywood, California`. Supply your own punchline... `Orange and snow capped mountains in California.` An alternate take on image 7. `A California Oil Field at Night`...charming. `Between Ventura and Santa Barbara`. Coastline view, 2 vehicles on the road... `Almond blossoms in California`...an explosion of insect-friendly pink flora strikes the orchards. `Picking oranges in California`. Workers with ladders and crates knuckle down to it... A short essay extolling the virtues of the region, Spanish settlers, natural wonders, roads, all given the Come And Get It treatment. Used With senders' address being Huntington Beach. Postmarked, not legible, but stamp design dates it to 1938, plus the Streamliner train. Stamped, 3c The images are fixed inside a slightly over-sized card folder, the glue is sound and in no danger of coming apart...nice! Colour images throughout. In very good, used condition. No torn areas. No pen marks to any of the images. 10 pictures uploaded, and I have tried - as best as possible - to list the designs as the images appear, above. 100mm x 152mm approx. / 6" x 4". Picture shows the actual item. Postage - US, Free postage. Thanks for looking! :o)
