Item description

Vintage original 27x41 in. US one-sheet poster from the classic 1980's Holocaust-themed drama/romance, SOPHIE'S CHOICE, released in 1982 by Universal Pictures and directed by Alan Pakula. Based upon the novel by William Styron, Sophie (Meryl Streep) is the survivor of Nazi concentration camps, who has found a reason to live with Nathan (Kevin Kline), a sparkling, if unsteady, American Jew obsessed with the Holocaust. Unrestored and folded as originally issued, this vintage original one-sheet poster is in very fine+ condition without any pinholes, tears, stains, or other flaws. When William Styron was writing the novel, he envisioned Ursula Andress in the role of Sophie. Meryl Streep begged director Alan J. Pakula for this role, literally on her hands and knees. Marthe Keller and Barbra Streisand both tried to win the role also, but Pakula ultimately chose Streep. She not only learned a Polish accent, but also learned how to speak German and Polish in order to have the proper accent of a Polish refugee. She reportedly learned Polish from one of the assistants working on the film, who happened to speak it. When Meryl accepted her "Best Actress" Academy Award for her performance in this film, she was already 5 months pregnant with daughter, Mamie Gummer. Her performance as Sophie Zawistowska is ranked #3 on Premiere Magazine's "100 Greatest Performances of All Time." In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked Sophie's Choice as the #91 Greatest Movie of All Time. It was the first inclusion of this film on the list.
