In The Tempest, Sullivan staked his claim to be considered as a contestant for eventual symphonic honours, and in the Introduction, the Overture to act IV, and the Prelude or Epilogue of Act V interlinked symphonic characteristics are to be discerned. In 1871 Charles Calvert invited Sullivan to compose music for his production of The Merchant of Venice. Sullivan was prompt carrying out his commission and the results of his labors was entirely felicitous. As a consequence of early success, he was soon in demand as a purveyor of 'novelties' for the principal provincial Festivals. He was in the process of starting a work for the Norwich Festival of 1866 when his father died. The work took the form of a symphonic overture and was given the title In Memoriam.
