The drama is an elaborate construction which seeks to interweave the lives of many different characters: Lois (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is a phone-sex operator, her husband Jerry (Chris Penn) a swimming pool cleaner to Ann (MacDowell), the wife of a TV star, Howard (Bruce Davison), and the mother of Casey (Zane Cassidy) who is hit by a car driven by Doreen (Lily Tomlin), who is a waitress married to Earl (Tom Waits). Jerry also cleans the pool of jazz singer Tess (Annie Ross), mother of cellist Zoe (Lori Singer) who flips when she hears of Casey's death. At Casey's deathbed in hospital is the long-lost father of Howard (Bruce Davison), and Dr Wyman (Matthew Modine), the sexually jealous husband of Marian (Moore), who is sister of Sherri (Madeleine Stowe), wife of an adulterous cop Gene (Robbins) who's cheating with Betty (Frances McDormand), ex-wife to Stormy (Peter Gallagher). Throughout the feature the various interactions paint a grand canvas of modern living that is replete with alienation, frustration and bitterness.
