Item description
Antique Khmer Style Bronze Koh Ker Style Shiva Statue - 44cm/18"
Measures (Height) 44cm/18"
Antique Khmer style Koh Ker style Shiva statue.
Standing in samapada with his arms radiating around him and clad in a short sampot with fishtail pleat and jewelled sash, the face with wide features surmounted by a cylindrical headdress. In his hands he holds a conch shell, chakra (disk), holy writings and lotus bud.
His softly contoured face with indigenous characteristic has a serene downcast expression, with heavy-lidded eyes, arched eyebrows carved in relief meet in the middle above a well-shaped broad nose, and wide lips with an insipid smile are framed by a second incised line.
The head is covered in tightly braided woven hair, enhanced by a cylindrical-shaped 'Chignon' style topknot, secured by a ribbon.
Shiva is stood upon a Yoni an abstract or aniconic representation of the Hindu Goddess Shakti. A primordial cosmos energy that represents the dynamic forces thought to move through the Universe. This energy is thought of as creative, sustaining, as well as destructive, and is sometimes referred to as an auspicious source of energy.
The Trilochana of Shiva can be seen on his forehead - the Three-Eyed Lord. It is the eye of wisdom, free from Maya, the illusion, and duality of life. It is also believed to be the source of his untamed energy.
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add a unique touch to any room of your home or workplace.
