Item description
SCORCHY SMITH
Rare 5.75" x 19.5" original daily newspaper comic strip art from 6/21/1954
Signed by Al Hollingsworth
Scorchy Smith is an American adventure comic strip created by artist John Terry that ran from March 17, 1930 to December 30, 1961. Scorchy Smith was a pilot-for-hire whose initial adventures took him across America, fighting criminals and aiding damsels in distress. Later, Scorchy traveled the world fighting spies and foreign aggression.
Alvin C. Hollingsworth (February 25, 1928 ? July 14, 2000) was the eighth artist to draw the strip, Scorchy Smith. Hollingsworth produced the Sunday and daily strips from September 28, 1953 to August 7, 1954. Hollingsworth, who along with Matt Baker and John Thornton, was one of a small number of African American artists working in comics during the 1940s-50s.
The strip is in VERY GOOD condition with some overall wear that includes some light stains and some browning. There is crease from the top of the middle of the strip that runs to about halfway to the right edge of the strip. The back of the strip has some what appears to be old glue stains on the right and left edges of the strip. (see pictures)
